The Carolina Hurricanes faced off against the Vancouver Canucks this past week in what proved to be another show of Carolina’s offensive strengths. The Canes brought their record to 3-0-1 with the 5-3 win, their best start since the Hurricanes relocated here in 1997.
Jordan Staal started the scoring out just fourty seconds into the first period with an unassisted shot down the middle, straight past the blocker of Jacob Markstrom, The Canucks answered minutes later with a long pass from Alex Edler to Sven Baertschi who outmaneuvered Curtis McElhinney with a faked backhand, tying the game at one. Brett Pesce scored his first of the season with 8:43 remaining in the period, from a similar location to Staal’s earlier goal, this time with an assist from Teuvo Teräväinen. Sebastian Aho extended his point streak to four games with the secondary assist. With 2:10 left in the first Michael Ferland caught a rebound and served it up hot to Sebastian Aho who made the one-timer goal, closing out the period 3-1.
The second was opened up fast with a beautiful goal from the slot by Bo Horvat, assisted by Baertschi. Not to be outshined by Vancouver’s promising first round draft pick, Elias Pettersson, Canes’ second overall pick, Andrei Svechnikov poked a rebound past Markstrom, his second goal this season, making him the first player born in the 2000s to score in the NHL and the first to score twice. Baertschi scored his second of the night, banking a shot in off Justin Faulk’s skate, giving the rookie, Pettersson, his sixth point. He currently leads the league in goals and points by a rookie with five goals and three assists.
Warren Foegle, another of this year’s top rookies, got the insurance goal in the third, finishing it out 5-3.
The victorious Hurricanes showcased their new postgame celebration, led by Ferland, charging the glass with a true “Storm Surge.”
Curtis McElhinney was 2-0, facing 22 shots in this game after being claimed off waivers from Toronto on October 2nd. He is currently 3-1 after this past Saturday’s game against the Colorado Avalanche.
Another wonderful day at the International Festival. Lots of Canadians dropped by the Booth and found out about CNNC. We hope to see you at our events, new friends! Many other visitors wanted to ‘spend winter in Canada’ and get their photo taken in front of our mural. Enjoy the few pics below.

The President of the Canadian Network of North Carolina sent a few photos of the Monarch Migration event organized by the North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences in partnership with the Consulate General of Canada in Atlanta and the Consulate General of México in Raleigh. The event was held on October 20. Enjoy!
Canada will be represented again this year at the Raleigh International Festival on Oct 26-28. We invite you to drop by the Canada Cultural Booth to see how we’ve interpreted this year’s theme, Celebrations Around the World. (You might want to wear a tuque or mukluks!) We have a wonderful team of Canadian volunteers ready to welcome you on all three days of the festival.

The Canada Cultural Booth is organized by Canadian Network of North Carolina in partnership with the Consulate General of Canada in Atlanta and the generous support of RBC Bank.
We are looking for an enthusiastic Canadian who is interested in helping CNNC keep in touch with its members in The Triangle and across the state.
The CNNC communications officer will respond to CNNC email as well as compose and send newsletters using Mail Chimp. The communications officer is considered a full member of the CNNC Leadership Team and will work closely with the president, events coordinator and social media coordinator to promote various activities and share information with the membership.
The best candidate will work well both independently and as part of team, will contribute to discussions, meet deadlines, and respond quickly to emails, will feel comfortable asking questions and seeking guidance from other team members, and will attend the rare CNNC meetings. They will also have enough volunteer time to devote to the various tasks required of the communications officer (time varies based on the number of emails received and when a newsletter is required). Familiarity with various online communication tools and excellent written communications skills are required.
Interested Canadians should send the CNNC Leadership Team an email introducing themselves and describing the skills and interests they possess to successfully get the CNNC message out to Canadians in North Carolina.
