Carolina Hurricanes

Game Report: Sens vs Canes (Jan 30)

The CNNC sport correspondent and event photographer tag-teamed for the report on Tuesday’s game.

The Carolina Hurricanes beat the Ottawa Senators 2-1, winning the first game of their eight-game home stand. Hopes to make the playoffs rest heavily on this homestead performance. The big news was the return of Sebastian Aho to the lineup after missing two weeks with a concussion and a knee injury. He didn’t disappoint with a huge goal in the third period to even up the score.
”I was very excited. I’ve been waiting for this since I got hurt,” Aho said. ”It felt really good to get that goal.’’

Aho’s goal brought the crowd alive, the Hurricanes played stronger and Rask fired a power-play wrist shot from the left faceoff circle past Anderson on the goaltender’s stick side with 11:32 remaining which turned out to be the game winner.

Jean-Gabriel Pageau opened the scoring in the second period and Craig Anderson made 37 saves. Ottawa had other scoring chances hitting three posts (two in the first period). The Sens have now lost six games in a row.
”I really think we deserved to get out of this with at least one point,” coach Guy Boucher said. ”I really thought after two periods we had a chance to win this one.”
Tom Dundon, the Canes new majority team owner (66%) was concerned about the low ticket pre-sale status for this game and opened up the lower bowl and club level for fans with tickets in the upper level. Many took advantage of the offer and upgrade. A total of 11,448 attended the game, the higher concentration of fans closer to the ice was a boost for the Canes.

Game Report: Flames vs Canes (Jan 14)

The CNNC sports correspondent reports on Sunday’s game, where the Flames were on a roll!

The Flames beat the Hurricanes 4-1. Right now the Flames are going so well, they are rolling to easy victories even without their top scorer Sean Monahan, who was out with the flu. Dougie Hamilton scored twice and Mike Smith made 38 saves extending the Flames winning streak to seven straight games. Matt Stajan and Matthew Tkachuk had a goal each and Johnny Gaudreau had two assists. Calgary controlled the entire game. Scott Darling made 26 saves for Carolina, which has lost four of five. Lee Stempniak scored with 4:31 remaining to avoid a shutout.

”We’re feeling good right now, obviously,” Hamilton said. ”We’re doing the little things consistent and we haven’t really had a terrible stretch of hockey yet.”

”I didn’t think we were engaged in the game, period,” Hurricanes coach Bill Peters said. ”I didn’t think we skated, I didn’t think we had much emotional engagement to the game. I thought we looked lethargic. We were slow.”

Flames captain Mark Giordano received a match penalty early in the third period for an illegal check to the face of Sebastian Aho and was ejected. Peters said he didn’t have an update on Aho’s status after the game.

Game Report: Habs vs Canes (Dec 27)

The Habs versus Canes game on December 27 was part of our sports correspondent’s holiday celebrations. Here’s his report and a couple of quotes as well as some photos:

Sebastian Aho scored twice in the third period to help lift the Carolina Hurricanes to a 3-1 win against the Montreal Canadiens at PNC Arena on Wednesday. Cam Ward made 23 saves for the Hurricanes (17-12-7), who have won three in a row and six of their past seven (6-1-0). Ward has won five straight starts. Staal played in his 800th NHL game. … The Hurricanes are 15-3-2 when scoring first.

“I think we’re starting to see some swagger from the guys. That’s confidence, right? You get into a bit of a rhythm, you start winning hockey games. Now we’re more talkative in the locker room and on the ice, trying to help each other. It’s all positive signs.” — Hurricanes goaltender Cam Ward

Alex Galchenyuk scored for the Canadiens (16-17-4), who have lost two in a row.  The Canadiens’ 24 shots matched their lowest total of the season; they had that many in a 6-2 loss against the Edmonton Oilers on Dec. 9. Montreal had six forwards with no more than one shot.

“I think we can do a lot better. It’s a matter of how much you want to throw pucks to the net, how much you want to go there and make things happen. We need to get better in that area, there’s no doubt about it.” — Canadiens coach Claude Julien

Game Report: Leafs vs Canes (Nov 24)

The CNNC’s sport correspondent sent in this report of the November 24 game between the Toronto Maple Leafs and the Carolina Hurricanes.

If you want to win consistently in the NHL you have to play three periods of hockey. The Leafs didn’t show up in the first period, looked like they didn’t want to win and were out-shot 14-4. Canes could have had 2-3 goals if it weren’t for the strong goal-tending of Leafs Anderson.

The second period was all Leafs, who scored 3 goals and chased Ward from the net. Darling replaced him for the third period, which was another reversal in the game. With the score 5-2 and 6 minutes left in the period, the Canes came back with 2 goals which made for an exciting finish; however, the Leafs held on for the win.

“Some nights are ugly. That’s what it is”. Toronto coach Mike Babcock said. “They were quicker and jumped better than us. Obviously, we scored some good goals, some timely goals, but Anderson was the main event.” Shots on goal were 47-25 in favour of the Hurricanes.
